Call for Papers on AI and Career : NICEC Journal Vol.58 (Spring 2027)

05-06-2026

NICEC is happy to announce a call for papers for Volume 58 of our journal, due for publication in Spring 2027.

While the journal welcomes submissions on all career-related topics, this issue will feature a special collection focused on AI and Career guest-edited by Chris Percy, Tom Staunton & Marianne Wilson.

This upcoming issue aims to understand the current and potential impact of Artificial Intelligence on the field of Career. This could include explorations of AI’s relationship to career guidance, career development and career professionals’ identities. Trans-national articles are welcome, as well as perspectives from across the life course.

The editors welcome a broad range of submissions and are particularly interested in those which challenge existing perspectives on AI. This may include

  • Theoretical explorations of AI and Career
  • Critical perspectives on AI (including post-humanist, socio-political, environmentalist and EDI perspectives)
  • Reflections on Career professionalism and AI
  • Evaluations of practices
  • Explorations of non-generative AI in Career work
  • Evidence of the impact of AI on client’s career development

Submissions are encouraged in a variety of formats, including original research, theoretical papers, evaluation studies, case studies of innovative career guidance approaches, and reflective commentaries on personal experiences within the field. Alternative article types and formats aligned with the special issue's aims will also be considered.

We are open to a broad definition of AI, including alternative definitions or framings that authors might propose. The EU AI Act provides a reasonable and broad starting point for the types of functionality we have in mind: “a machine-based system that is designed to operate with varying levels of autonomy and that may exhibit adaptiveness after deployment, and that, for explicit or implicit objectives, infers, from the input it receives, how to generate outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations, or decisions that can influence physical or virtual environments”.

Prospective authors are welcome to discuss their proposed contributions with either Tom Staunton ([email protected]) or Tristram Hooley (Chief Editor, [email protected]) with any questions.

The deadline for full first drafts is 11th December 2026. Following peer review, authors will receive feedback and decisions by 22nd February 2027, with revisions due by 15th March. The publication process will continue with proof reviews in April 2027, culminating in the issue's release on 3rd May 2027.

Detailed submission guidelines, including formatting and word count requirements, are available on the NICEC website.
